Rachi Action for Healthcare Initiatives (RAHI) works with communities in the Lake Victoria island environment to promote healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities through freshwater conservation, wetland protection, biodiversity monitoring, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, water-resource protection, environmental education, community stewardship and climate-resilient livelihoods.
Our approach recognises that environmental health, human health and sustainable livelihoods are interconnected. We therefore work to strengthen community capacity to protect the lake and wetlands while creating practical livelihood opportunities that reduce pressure on natural resources and improve household resilience.
Wetlands are among the most important ecosystems connected to Lake Victoria. They provide habitat for wildlife, support fisheries, help regulate water systems, filter pollutants and provide resources and livelihoods for surrounding communities.
Our work also includes engagement around Mabamba Wetland, an internationally important wetland ecosystem and habitat for the Shoebill and other wetland species, ensuring local people are active participants in protecting the ecosystems on which they depend.
